The Republic of Kazakhstan
The state is located in the central part of Eurasia. Territory - 2724.9 thousand square kilometers. Capital (since 1997) - Astana. Former capital - the city of Almaty - retained its importance as a financial, economic, social and cultural center of the country.
Major cities are Karaganda, Shymkent, Pavlodar, Taraz, Ust-Kamenogorsk.
Population - 16.2 million people (2010). National composition (according to official statistics): Kazakhs (63.6%), Russians (23.3%), Uzbeks (2.9%), Ukrainians (2%), Germans (1.1%), Tatars, Uighurs, Belarusians, Azerbaijanis, Turks, Koreans, Chechens, etc. The population of Kazakhstan consists of more than 120 nationalities.
In administrative and territorial relations, the republic is divided into 14 regions and 2 autonomous administrative units - the capital city of Astana and national importance city of Almaty.
Official language is Kazakh. In state organizations of local authorities on a par with the Kazakh language, officially used Russian language.
Currency - tenge ($1 - 150 tenge).
National Day is Independence Day on December 16.
According to the 1995 Constitution, Kazakhstan is a republic with a presidential form of government. Nursultan Nazarbayev is a president. On elections of April 3, 2011 he was re-elected as a head of state. Legislative authority is bicameral Parliament, consisting of the lower house - the Majilis (Chairman - U.B. Muhamedzhanov) and upper house - the Senate (Chairman - K.A. Mami). By results of elections to the Senate of 19 August 2011, all the seats in the upper house of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan were won by the ruling National Democratic Party "Nur Otan". Executive power is carried out by the Government, which headed by Prime Minister Karim Masimov since January 10, 2007.
Economy. Kazakhstan is rich in natural resources. It takes the leading place in the world by reserves of uranium, zinc, tungsten, barite, silver, lead, chromite, copper, molybdenum and gold. In the western parts of the country are concentrated large deposits of oil and natural gas and is conducted active development of them.
The leading industries are mining, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, engineering, oil refining and petro chemistry, agriculture - the production of grain and animal breeding.
In 90-ies Kazakhstan were made substantial economic reforms and privatization. The part of non-governmental property was about 80%. The largest industrial enterprises were transferred in trust to foreign companies. Since 1993, in Kazakhstan's economy, mainly in the oil and gas industry, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, came more than 40 billion dollars of direct foreign investments.
Foreign economic relations. Kazakhstan maintains trade relations with not less than 120 countries. Main types of export products are ferrous and non-ferrous metals, mining raw materials, fuel, oil and petroleum products. In the import structure are dominated machinery, equipment, conveyance and consumer products. Main export partners - Switzerland, Russia, China, France and Iran. Main import partners - Russia, Germany, China, Ukraine and USA.
Foreign policy. Kazakhstan has established diplomatic relations with more than 120 countries. It is a member of the UNO and its main specialized agencies and other international organizations. It is a participant of the CIS, a member of the Collective Security Treaty, the Eurasian Economic Community and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Kazakhstan is the initiator of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.
Giving a priority to relations with Russia and other CIS countries in bilateral relations area, Kazakhstan is actively developing cooperation with China, USA, EU states and the Islamic and Turkic world.
Since June 2011, Kazakhstan is the Chairman of the Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs(CMFA) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) (June 28 of this year in Astana was held the 38th session of CMFA, the Organization of Islamic Conference was renamed to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation).
