The Republic of Uzbekistan

The Republic of Uzbekistan is located in the center of the Eurasian continent, in interfluve of Amu Darya and Syr Darya. It shares borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

Capital - Tashkent (about 2.1 million people).

Administrative divisions: Tashkent, Republic of Karakalpakstan, 12 regions - Andijan, Buxoro, Jizzax, Qashqadaryo, Navoiy, Namangan, Samarqand, Surxondaryo, Sirdaryo, Tashkent, Fergana, Xorazm.

Official language is Uzbek. Russian language, without the official status, is used as a mean of international communication.

National day is the Independence Day (September 1).

The political independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan declared on 31st of August, 1991. According to the Constitution, adopted in December 1992, Uzbekistan is a sovereign democratic republic. The head of state is the President (on December 23, 2007 presidential elections, I.A. Karimov was re-elected for a second seven-year term).

The highest legislative body is the Oliy Majlis (Parliament). By the decision of the referendum in 2002, it converted to the bicameral parliament (Senate and Legislative Chamber). The new structure was elected in January 2010 for a five-year term. The Senate has 100 members (by 6 from Tashkent, 12 regions and Karakalpakstan, 16 - appointed by the president of the country). I. Sabirov is a Chairman of the Upper House.

In the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis are 150 deputies. Speaker is D. Tashmukhamedova. The highest executive body is the Cabinet of Ministers. Prime Minister - Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Uzbekistan has an active foreign policy. Republic is recognized by 150 states with 88 of them are established diplomatic relations. In Tashkent are 43 diplomatic offices (including consular), as well as 15 representatives of international organizations (including 5 financial) and three economic and trade offices. Abroad are accredited 46 foreign embassies and consular offices of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a member of the UNO, OSCE, CIS, SCO, CSTO, OIC and other international and regional organizations. In October 2008, Uzbekistan suspended its membership in EurAsEC.
